Week of November 5th

This week we will have an end test on Oedipus the King and begin discussing existentialism. I will be handing out the The Stranger books on Monday. Take a look at the assignments and due dates listed below.

Tuesday, November 6th -- End Test on Oedipus the King

Bring home a textbook to study and to prepare notes for the in-class writing question.

Oedipus is considered a classic example of the "tragic hero." Discuss why the story of Oedipus is a "tragedy" in the classic sense of the word (in other words, not just because it is sad), and why Oedipus is still a hero at the end of the story. Be sure to use specific examples from the text to support your answer.

  • Take a look at class notes on The Greek Tragedy and Characteristics of a Sophoclean Tragedy.
  • Take a look at the tragedy notes and questions in the textbook-- Page 432 (Commentary on Tragedy), Page 453 (Analyzing Literature & Thinking and Writing), and Page 471 (Critical Thinking and Reading).

Due Monday, November 12th -- Part I (pages 3-59) of The Stranger.
